DAYS BEFORE NEW TERM, SUPREME COURT’S PUBLIC APPROVAL BOTTOMS OUT YET AGAIN

SAN FRANCISCO, CA (September 29, 2022) — With a new Supreme Court term just days away, a new Gallup poll released today shows Supreme Court approval at another historic low, with just 47% of U.S. adults claiming to have "a great deal" or "a fair amount" of trust in the judiciary. The survey also shows a record high — 42% — of Americans who believe Supreme Court is too conservative.

The Court’s new term this Monday will usher in a new wave of attacks by the conservative supermajority on democracy, voting rights, LGBTQ rights, rights for indigenous children and families, our climate, and other cherished rights and freedoms.

Take Back the Court released the following statement on behalf of its executive director, Sarah Lipton-Lubet, in response to the news:

“Another day, another poll showing that the Supreme Court’s right-wing majority has destroyed its legitimacy. The MAGA justices can bellyache all they want about decorum and ‘crossed lines,’ but as long as they continue to trample our rights with impunity, this trend will only accelerate.”

Take Back the Court raises awareness about the urgent need to expand the number of seats on the Supreme Court to address the theft of the court by Senator Mitch McConnell during the Obama Administration. Without adding seats, Congress will not be able to restore the right to vote, ensure reproductive freedom, protect workers, halt our climate emergency, or pass new legislation. Court expansion, which can be accomplished without a constitutional amendment, is the only reform that enables the un-rigging of the system and the restoration of democracy.
