RIGHT-WING SUPREME COURT PROPS UP XENOPHOBIC TRUMP-ERA POLICY

SAN FRANCISCO, CA (December 19, 2022) — Today, the Supreme Court temporarily blocked the Biden administration from winding down the Title 42 immigration policy that the Trump administration started using as a means to expel immigrants from the U.S. without due process during the height of the pandemic. Take Back the Court released the following statement on behalf of its executive director, Sarah Lipton-Lubet, in response:

“Let’s call this move what it really is: another effort by the Court to prop up a xenophobic right-wing policy aimed at excluding immigrants and asylum-seekers from finding safe haven in the U.S. It’s heinous, but it’s no surprise; these extremist justices never miss an opportunity to strip our rights away — especially if it means they can steal more power for themselves. To stop them for good, we have to expand the Court.”

Take Back the Court raises awareness about the urgent need to expand the number of seats on the Supreme Court to address the theft of the court by Senator Mitch McConnell during the Obama Administration. Without adding seats, Congress will not be able to restore the right to vote, ensure reproductive freedom, protect workers, halt our climate emergency, or pass new legislation. Court expansion, which can be accomplished without a constitutional amendment, is the only reform that enables the un-rigging of the system and the restoration of democracy.
