Stolen Supreme Court an Immediate Threat to Decades of Labor Rights

SAN FRANCISCO, CA (September 3, 2021) — Take Back the Court today urged Congress to protect working people from the Supreme Court. Working Overtime: The Supreme Court’s Assault on The Labor Movement details how the highest Court in the land will continue to target the labor movement until we expand the Court. Alongside this release, Take Back the Court Founder and President Aaron Belkin issued the following statement:

“On the eve of Labor Day, we’re reminded of the decades-long struggle to secure workers’ rights to fair pay, safe working conditions, and collective bargaining. These policies have strengthened our economy, shielded workers from unsafe and inhumane working practices, and secured basic rights for workers like healthcare and a minimum wage. But we’ve reached a critical point in our democracy where the Supreme Court has become one of the greatest threats to American labor rights.

“According to a 2013 study, the Court under Chief Justice John Roberts favored business interests over workers’ rights more than at any other time between 1945 and 2011. The current stolen Supreme Court — with seven justices who previously represented corporations, and not a single union membership among them — has only moved further to the right since then, and is poised to continue this egregious assault on labor rights. Expanding the Supreme Court is the only way we can urgently restore trust and integrity to our nation’s highest Court. Until then, unelected conservative justices will continue to wield their power to protect corporate interests instead of the American people.

“Workers deserve so much better than the raw deal they’ve been getting. They deserve action.”

Take Back the Court raises awareness about the urgent need to expand the number of seats on the Supreme Court to address the theft of the court by Senator Mitch McConnell during the Obama Administration. Without adding seats, Congress will not be able to restore the right to vote, ensure reproductive freedom, protect workers, halt our climate emergency, or pass new legislation. Court expansion, which can be accomplished without a constitutional amendment, is the only reform that enables the un-rigging of the system and the restoration of democracy.
